Background

The Mad Dog Oil Field is an offshore field located in the Gulf of Mexico, consisting of blocks 825, 826 and 782. The field was discovered in 1998 and became operational in 2005. It is owned by BP (60.5%), BHP Billiton (23.9%), and Chevron (15.6%) and BP operates the field.

A spar platform and the deck has living arrangements for 126 people, with an additional 60 created when using temporary quarters. 12 wells operate the field at a depth of 4,500 feet.

Appraisal drilling in 2009 and 2011 has helped shape the current estimates that the entire Mad Dog area contains 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent (bboe). Current production capacity on the Mad Dog field stands at roughly 100,000 barrels per day and 60 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. Oil is transported via the Caesar pipeline and natural gas via the Cleopatra pipeline.

Phase 2 plans

Mad Dog Phase 2 is an extension to the original Mad Dog project to increase production on the field by up to 140,000 bboe a day.

In 2013 the project was estimated to cost around $20bn, but the plans were revised to reduce the cost of the project to $9bn. The development is predicted to be profitable at or below current oil prices as of December 2016 and oil production is estimated to begin in 2021.

A semi-submersible floating production platform with up to 14 production wells is planned for the southern portion of the Mad Dog field and west of the existing spar platform. South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries won the $1.3bn contract to build the unit.

All partners in the project have made final investment decisions in the project. At the time of writing, the latest development was the allocation of the EPC contract for the subsea production system.
