The Lihir Mine is an open-pit mine in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea and is one of the largest known gold deposits in the world.

The gold deposit is situated within an extinct volcanic crater and is extracted using pressure oxidation before a conventional leaching process. Since production started in 1997 the site has produced more than 10 million ounces of gold.

The site employs a total of 4,500 people with a combination of residential and mobile workers. Accommodation for employees is provided and facilities include Messes, a shop, a primary school, a medical clinic, and a sports and social club.

The process plant at the mine has recently been expanded, which included the installation of a new crushing facility and upgrades to the ore processing plant.
