Located in the North Sea, 150km off the coast of Shetland, the $7bn Mariner Project will produce up to 55,000bbl of crude oil per day.

The Mariner and Mariner East fields are shallow reserves lying between 1,200m and 1,500m below sea level at water depths between 97m and 112m. Recoverable reserves are estimated at 250m barrels of oil.

The area was discovered in 1981 and re-valued in 1996/97. The current project's development concept was revealed in 2011 and the FID announced in December 2012. Activities on the project started in 2016 and the Mariner field is expected to come onstream in 2018 and the Mariner East field in 2020.

The area is expected to be operational for 30 years and over 700 permanent jobs will be created at the site once in production.
