LOCATION: Central Africa

Our client, a global Chemicals Operator, has a fixed term contract/ permanent opportunity for a Draftsman Trainer to be based in Central Africa.

JOB SUMMARY

Ownership of review/enforcement and execution of the training plans outlined for the Local draftsmen within the Technical group.

Coordination with engineers & work requestors for support during task assignment to the draftsmen to ensure that the objectives of the training and progression plans are met and, as far as is practicable, are timely through on the job training/learning.

Development of systems of training (implementation/auditing and reporting on progression status) that can be carried on by departmental staff, for sustainable development of Local draftsmen through the hierarchy of the organization.

First line review in the preparation and issuing of new and revised design drawings as required by the plant team. This includes the following main drawing types:
  • Piping Isometrics
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
  • Civil & Architectural Drawings
  • Structural Drawings (buildings/platforms etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • 10 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in engineering and/or piping design work as a draftsman in an industrial facility or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below:
Substitution:          
  • Possession of a valid certificate issued by a recognized technical institute above the high school level, indicating proficiency in AutoCAD Level 3, may be substituted for five years of the required experience.
OR
  • 2 years’ experience as an AutoCAD trainer
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates' training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; and determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.
  • Previous experience with training other personnel.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of drafting including tolerancing, dimensioning, and isometric projections.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of drafting instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of terminology, symbols, codes and standard abbreviations in general drafting best practices.
  • Skill in the use of drafting instruments and equipment.   
  • Skill in freehand drawing/sketching.
  • Familiarity with ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping Codes
 


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Auditing and reporting of training progress and performance of each Local draftsman against the approved plan, as part of performance assessment and documentation of readiness for progression.
  • Oversee/review the preparation/modification drawings of differing types by the draftsmen:
    • Piping Isometrics
    • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
    • Civil Drawings
    • Structural Drawings (buildings/platforms etc)
    • Ensure that the roles of the Draftsman in the Management of Change (MoC) process is met by way of creation of drawings and mark ups for all levels of development (Conceptual design to As-built)
    • Ensure that the work systems within the organization for project control, management of change and document control are adhered to in the execution of tasks, under the guidance of the relevant technical personnel making requests for draftsman services
    • Ensure compliance with current Company Regulations and Procedures
    • Maintain safe working practices as specified by such regulations
    • Undertake other tasks or assignments which may from time to time be directed as required by senior management
