Job Description

Lead HSE – FIFO from Cairns or Darwin
 
Our client is a major mining and metals company with assets around the globe and the purpose of this role is to manage the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) function and is accountable for HSE across the clients operation. The role will act as the conduit between the Sustainability team and the operation, in the development and implementation of the HSE business plan.
The position forms part of the client’s leadership team with full participation to support the operations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the HSE business plan and goals, ensuring these align with the Sustainability function business plan, whilst also addressing specific HSE needs and risk
  • Accountable for HSE owned work including:
    • managing HSE statutory requirements
    • executing HSE accountable work (eg. hygiene sampling, licensing / permitting renewal requirements)
    • Providing technical advice relating to Health, Safety and Environmental matters
  • Ensure HSE work confirms to the appropriate HSE standard, systems, processes, and critical controls for HSE material risks
  • Participate and monitor in site assurance and verification activities, to ensure compliance to South32 health, safety and environment standards
  • Support the Well-Designed Work process to ensure safety is an outcome of work design
  • Develop sound working relationships based on mutual trust, with stakeholders, to ensure HSE work is executed in alignment with the operational requirements
  • Develop and manage the HSE operating budget
  • Lead, develop, coach and mentor the team to deliver against objectives and sustain functional excellence
 
Requirements
  • A Tertiary qualification in Health and Safety or equivalent qualification
  • Thorough understanding of current OHS legislation and a proven ability to pragmatically apply this knowledge in an engineering/project management environment
  • Able to develop and deliver HSE training, develop high quality HSE management plans, facilitate HSE Risk Assessments, undertake Root Cause Analysis where required, lead HSE audits, undertake HSE observations
  • Strong understanding of the mining and metals, construction industry and relevant legislation
  • Effective time management, planning, interpersonal and communication skills
  • A proactive approach to Health, safety and the Environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Able to develop close working relationships with customers and stakeholders
