Senior Automation Scientist – Cambridge – Permanent

Science and technology are a field that have advanced in synergy to benefit the Life Science sector hugely. My client, an industry leading Biotech company are currently seeking the expertise of a Senior Automation Scientist to transform their NGS focused platform in the aid of cancer diagnostics with robotic liquid handlers to streamline the process.

Senior Automation Scientist Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with equipment users to develop & optimise assay protocols on the high throughput automation platforms, ensuring optimal efficiency & performance
  • Lead equipment breakdown deep-dive activities to identify the underlying cause, with the objective of mitigating its reoccurrence
  • Develop bespoke support solutions built around the requirements of DNA extraction, assay measurements and sequencing pipelines
  • Establish & maintain strong relationships with automation vendor application specialists
  • Maintain awareness of new developments in the field of Laboratory Automation
  • Develop Introductory Equipment Training Packages intended for both the internal users and customers
  • Install, test and validate new automation systems
  • Ensure that validated systems are maintained in compliance with the Quality System
  • Design and optimise automation workflows to ensure they are compatible with test reagents and meet scientific needs and user requirements
  • Enable data transfer and traceability between automation platforms and LIMS (or similar) systems
  • Write SOPs, risk assessments, and work instructions
  • Work across departments and proactively engage in knowledge sharing and peer support, including training of laboratory technicians and scientists
Senior Automation Scientist Key Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience with formal training and proven expertise in automation, engineering or a in a life science related subject
  • Demonstrable experience with automation platforms
  • Experience of developing & optimising complex protocols on liquid handling automation
  • Solid understanding of core competencies involved in operating liquid handling automation
  • Experience writing protocols for Hamilton, Tecan or similar platforms
  • Background in biology and automation of DNA extraction and/or assays and /or sequencing techniques
  • Ability to design experiments to troubleshoot and assess technology performances
  • Highly motivated and innovative scientist with effective influencing and problem-solving skills
  • Desirable - Demonstrable expertise in a wide range of molecular biology techniques including DNA extraction and quantification, immunochemistry, DNA editing and modifications and OMICS technologies
