Case Study - Greenfield Methanol Plant

Volume Staffing Support - Permanent Hire

We provided extensive support for a new plant where we held a successful careers fair and significantly raised our client's profile with candidates

Our client became 50% JV partners on a major refinery in Beaumont, TX. With 40% of the construction plans complete, the client had to develop a comprehensive plan to staff an operations and maintenance team to run their $1B greenfield methanol plant. They needed to employ close to 80 permanent specialists over a time period of 12-18 months.

Beaumont, situated in a region of East Texas known as the golden triangle, is a notoriously difficult region for recruiting talent due to the stable workforce and retention strategies of the many well-established and mature petrochemical and chemical plants in the area.

Based on a strong and successful history with our client, particularly through our engagement in their remote projects on their Pampa Fuels and Big Lake Methanol plants, our client was confident in awarding their exclusive staffing contract to NESF ahead of other competitors.

The new roles on offer ranged widely in skillset including a team of 36 specialists for positions such as:

  • Administrative Staff
  • Document Controllers
  • Engineers and Planners
  • Inspectors
  • Maintenance Technicians
  • Process Operators
  • Shift Supervisors
Our Solution

Due to the varied requirements of the roles on offer, we placed two NESF recruiters on the project site in Beaumont to directly support the local HR Manager and Project Director on a daily basis.

This method allowed us to:

  • Provide the client with an immediate cost saving of over $100k in fixed cost salaries for the project
  • Understand their company values and gain a thorough insight into their company culture through first-hand experience
  • Draw upon our strengthening knowledge to create a reliable candidate screening process as the headcount increased

To help identify future hiring process improvements, we installed a customer feedback process for all new hires on the project.

The results of our support

The ongoing nature of the recruitment drive meant that reduced time-to-hire plans were essential in obtaining suitable personnel with the right niche skillset at the correct stages of the project.

Our client was impressed with the candidate quality throughout the process. Through our local and international talent pools NESF was able to source and attract the required large workforce, during which we:

  • maintained a 30 day average time-to-hire deliverable;
  • successfully hired over 65 permanent staff and 5 contractors over a 9 month period;
  • saved the client upwards of $500,000 in recruitment costs;
  • achieved a 100% retention rate on the project.
